Snowboarding is such a fun activity. There's almost no better way to spend a beautiful winter day in the mountains than to go snowboarding. It's like skiing--only better. But it's only fun if you know how to turn on your snowboard and change directions. Otherwise it's just a straight shot into a tree.

    Changing Direction on a Snowboard

  1. Step 1

Make sure you can go straight. Before you can learn how to turn, it's a good idea to make sure you know how to go straight down the hill. Of course you shouldn't just head straight down, or you'll be in trouble, but you should have a decent grasp on how to stay on your feet. That way, once you make your turns you'll have smooth sailing.

  2. Step 2

Stand up tall. To make your turn, you need to be tall on your feet.

  3. Step 3

Lean into the turn. In snowboarding, there are two turns you can make, toe side or heel side. Whichever way you are going, you need to lean onto that edge of your board. As you start to lean onto your edge, the board will begin to shift toward that edge and you'll be making your turn.

  4. Step 4

Shift your body weight. Leaning into your turn is really just about shifting your body weight toward that side. So if you are turning toward your toe side, you need to shift your body weight toward your toe edge. This should be done slowly and evenly. If you just quickly lean into the turn, you will not get an even turn and you will probably lose your balance. So ease your body slowly into the turn and it'll end up nice and round.

  5. Step 5

Bend your knees. As your snowboard gets into the turn, you should be bending your knees. This will help you keep your balance and will make your turn smooth and well-carved into the snow. Carving is a way of making your turn on the snowboard where you dig into the snow with your board.

Tips & Warnings
  • Changing directions on your board is all about maintaining your balance, so take it slow and stay on your feet.
