How to Strip Paint Effectively

Stripping paint correctly is the first step in restoring or redesigning a piece of furniture. Removing old paint will allow a blank canvas for you to refinish the furniture however you wish.

• Goggles
• Old paint brushes
• Toothpicks and toothbrush
• Wool pads
• Coffee can
• Thin rope
• Newspapers or cardboard
• Scraper
• Paper towels

How to Strip Paint Effectively

1. Set up your work area in a place that will get plenty of outside air. Either an area with lots of windows, or if weather will permit, working on the piece outside will be best.

2. Place the item you are removing paint from on either several layers of newspaper or cardboard. Cardboard is going to be your best choice if you are concerned about the flooring underneath. A layer of plastic or a tarp placed underneath your cardboard or newspaper will give added protection.

3. Put on your gloves and protective googles. Read entirely the directions on the paint remover to ensure you are using properly. Remove the lid and pour a small amount of the paint remover into your coffee can. Replace the lid.

4. Work on small areas at a time. This will keep the project from becoming overwhelming. Using one of the old paintbrushes, apply a layer of the paint remover to the piece you are working on.

5. Leave the paint remover on the amount of time recommended by the instructions on the can. It will vary depending on the type of paint remover you purchased.

6. Use your scraper to begin the process of paint removal. The paint should come off fairly easily, thanks to the paint remover. For any paint left over from the scraper, use the wool pad to remove the rest.

7. Allow the piece to dry thoroughly once all paint is removed. If at all possible, allow the piece to dry outside. Paper towels are a great way to soak up excess paint remover. Make sure to dispose of properly. Check your local weather before tackling this project and try to work on it on a day that is going to be warm and dry.
