Things You'll Need:

  • Established plants
  • Potting soil
  • Garden space
  • Fertilizer
  • Water
  • Sun
  1. Step 1

Choose healthy plants. Most people do not grow rhododendrons from seed because it can take up to five years before the first bloom. Select full, healthy plants from your local nursery.

  2. Step 2

Select the best place in your garden. Rhododendrons like afternoon shade and must be protected from wind and harsh sunlight. Direct sunlight can burn the plant, so keep it sheltered and out of the full sun.

  3. Step 3

Check your soil's PH balance. Rhododendrons grow best in an acid soil. It should have a a PH of 5.5.

  4. Step 4

Keep them moist. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but do not over water. The soil should have good draining properties.

  5. Step 5

Prune young plants. Pruning a young plant will encourage growth for a fuller plant. Avoid pruning established plants as you could damage next year's blooms. Pruning should be done in early spring for best results.

  6. Step 6

Mulch your plants. Adding mulch around your rhododendrons will help protect their shallow roots and keep the soil moist.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful of the shallow roots. Weed with care.
