How to Become a Fireman

A fireman has a very dangerous but rewarding career. They are responsible for performing a number of challenging duties such as controlling fires, saving lives, providing emergency services to victims, saving property and protecting the environment. A fireman is also responsible for performing fire inspections and participating in public safety education. Firemen may choose to work in a variety of settings such as urban, industrial or wild land firefighting.

  • Passing score on written examination

  • Psychological examination
  1. Step 1

    Meet the minimum basic requirements which include being at least 18 years of age, having a high school diploma or GED and having a valid driver’s license.

  2. Step 2

    Gain experience as a volunteer fireman. Although it is normally not required that you have volunteer experience, this is an excellent way to gain some valuable skills and training in firefighting. Visit your local fire department and obtain a membership application for the volunteer fireman position.

  3. Step 3

    Obtain a job application for the fireman position. You can pick up a job application at your local fire department, local government office or library. Be sure to complete the entire application and make it look neat and professional.

  4. Step 4

    Submit the application to your local fire department. The fire caption and/or other fire staff personnel, reviews your application and contacts you in they’re interested in having you proceed with the application process.

  5. Step 5

    Take the required examinations. You must successfully pass several examinations, including a civil service written examination, physical agility exam and a psychological and medical exam. You must also pass a background check and an oral interview.

  6. Step 6

    Begin the firefighting training program. If you successfully pass the examinations, then you are able to begin training to become a fireman. Your training consists of classroom instruction and hands-on experience and the training period can last for up to 6 months.

  7. Step 7

    Complete the required probation period. Once you are hired to work as a fireman, you must complete the initial probation period with that department (which may last anywhere from 6 months to a year).

  8. Step 8

    Become a regular fireman with your local department. After successfully completing the standard probation period, you are now a regular fireman with that department. However, all firemen must continue to receive periodic trainings and certifications on an on-going basis.

  • It is important to exercise on a regular basis, in order to remain physically fit for this job.
  • Firemen are often required to work long and extended hours.
  • Being a fireman is a dangerous career and it sometimes involves risking your life to save others.
