Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Floor scraper
  • Adhesive
  • Adhesive remover
  • 75 to 150 lb roller
  • Adhesive trowel
  • Bucket
  • Scrub brush
  • Cleanser

    Preparation for adhesive

  1. Step 1

Remove old flooring. If it is carpet, pull up the carpet tack strips along the walls.

  2. Step 2

If flooring is wood be sure all the high places are planed down. The floor scraper may do the job, or you might need a sander. If the floor is concrete, use cleanser and scrub brush to remove anything that causes the floor to be uneven.

  3. Step 3

Sweep and wash the floor thoroughly. Let the floor dry and make sure it is at the recommended temperature level for the adhesive.

  4. Step 4

Measure the floor making note of cuts to be made around permanent fixtures such as cabinets. It is recommended that refrigerators and dishwashers be removed.

  5. Step 5

Roll out the new vinyl flooring in such a way that it is flat. Measure and draw your pattern from Step4 onto the vinyl flooring. Allow and extra inch so that trimming causes a snug fit.

  6. The glue down

  7. Step 1

Place cut vinyl on the clean and dry floor. Take care to not rip the vinyl flooring where cuts have been made for permanent fixtures.

  8. Step 2

Locate a starting point so that you will be able to apply adhesive on the last area to be covered without cornering yourself.

  9. Step 3

Begin by pulling enough of the vinyl flooring back so that the adhesive will not get dry before applying the needed amount. The adhesive container will let you know how much of an area you should start with. Always stop spreading adhesive within 2 inches of a wall.

  10. Step 4

Continue this technique until the entire area is covered. Follow manufacturers technique when placing vinyl over the adhesive you just applied. Some adhesives require a 'tackiness' in order to get the best results.

  11. Step 5

Only do this step if flooring material requires it. Roll the flooring with a 75 to 150 pound roller to work material flat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always wear safety glasses.
  • If possible, roll back one half of the flooring and apply adhesive by reaching over the rolled back portion as far as you can reach, then roll the vinyl over the area just applied.
  • Use quarter round or base shoe along the walls where possible.
  • Don't move refrigerator onto the new flooring until the recommended time has for drying has elapsed.
