Step 1
Do your fashion research. Pick up a few fashion magazines and check out the latest styles in t-shirts. Are the celebrities and models wearing their tees in patterns or solids, brights or neutrals? Notice the length and cut of the shirts that look best.
-
Step 2
Think about your budget. You can buy t-shirts for as little as a dollar each in a plastic multi-packet at a supermarket or discount store. But t-shirts are no longer reserved for weekend wear, and couture designers make t-shirts that retail at over $100. These t-shirts can be worn with everything from business suits to special occasion skirts and they can last for years or even decades if laundered properly. Figure out where you plan to wear your tees and budget accordingly.
-
Step 3
Head to the stores. If you want to buy a handful of the season's t-shirts for everyday wear, they can be found in the greatest variety at major retailers like Old Navy, Gap, Express, and Banana Republic. If you are looking for a high-end t-shirt you will want to check out designers like Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana at their stores or browse around retailers like Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus.
-
Step 4
Keep an eye on important details. One of the most important details in a t-shirt is sleeve length. The perfect sleeve length for each person depends on that person's arms and his or her comfort level with showing them off. But under no circumstances should a short sleeve on a t-shirt extend beyond the elbow. Another important detail is fabric. Look for t-shirts made of a mix of cotton and lycra for a little stretch and "bounceback" after washing.

Step 5
Try them on. Be sure to try on a large variety even though they are "only" t-shirts. You might be surprised at how much they vary in terms of fit, comfort, and professional polish. You should be able to distinguish between t-shirts that are appropriate or inappropriate for the office.
