If your cat is sneezing and wheezing she's probably pretty miserable, and you're wondering what you can do to help. More than likely your cat is sneezing and wheezing due to an allergy. Such symptoms are often caused by dust or pollen. Wheezing occurs when the airways become inflammed and constricted causing breathing to become difficult. Wheezing may also be the result of asthma. Cats can suffer from asthma just as people do. Here are a few steps that you can take to help your pet breathe easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you smoke around your pet this may account for the sneezing and wheezing. Second-hand smoke can have its effects on pets too. Some pets are also allergic to cigarette smoke. If you smoke try not to do so around your pet, especially if she suffers from allergies or asthma.

  2. Step 2

Put moisture in the air with a humidifier. Winter heating and air condtioning in the summer can both create dry air in the home. Dry air causes the nasal passages to dry out and can affect your cat's breathing.

  3. Step 3

Choose a low dust litter, preferably one that clumps. Litter that creates a good bit of dust when scratched can affect your cat's breathing.

  4. Step 4

Clean and vacuum often to keep dust to a minimum especially if your cat seems to be allergic to house dust.

  5. Step 5

Give your cat a vitamin supplement to promote a healthy and strong immune system.

  6. Step 6

Try to eliminate stress in your cat's environment. Sources of stress can include moving to a new home or introducing a new pet to the household. If your pet is stressed it could cause asthma or allergies to flare up. Stress can affect your pet's health just as it does your own so try to keep your cat's environment content and stress free.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your cat is having difficulty breathing see a veterinarian immediately. Even a cold can turn into pneumonia. Cats are very susceptible to upper respiratory infections which can be serious and require medical attention.
