The Blue Striped Grunt Fish gets its name from the pig like grunts it makes from grinding their pharyngeal teeth together. Here are some ways that might help you identify one if you were to come across one.

    How to Identify Blue Striped Grunt Fish

  1. Step 1

    The Blue Striped Grunt fish can be identified by the yellow body with narrow, silver stripes that run along the entire length of the body. They also have stripes with a particular arch right under both eyes.

  2. Step 2

    The dorsal fin is yellow and the soft dorsal and caudal fins are dark in color. The anal fin is a murky yellow in color. The pelvic and pectoral fins are a chalky color.

  3. Step 3

    The inside of their mouths are a bright red or orange.

  4. Step 4

    The average length is about 8-14 inches with 18 inches being the maximum length. Their weight can go up to 1.7 pounds with that being the maximum ever recorded.

  5. Step 5

    They feed on deet, bivalve, mollusks, crustaceans, and smaller fish.

  6. Step 6

    These fish are found in tropical and subtropical coastal marine waters. They can be found on shallow reefs and range from the Western Atlantic, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, Caribbean, and Brazil.
