Every new mom needs a supply of onesies, not just for practical everyday use. It also adds a little bling bling when taking baby out and about. Here's a fun and fresh take on the old standby diaper shirt. A beginner with a sewing machine can complete this project in less than two hours. It's a great gift to make for a baby shower (especially if Mom or Dad are bowlers).

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 White Baby Onesie
  • 1 15" Length of 2" White Lace
  • 1 15" Length of 1" Black Lace
  • 2 6" Lengths of Black Lace (for sleeves)
  • 1 Bowling Pin Patch
  • 1 4" Length Red Pom Pom Trim
  • 1 4" Piece White Lace
  • Red Fabric Scraps
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Pencil
  • Cardboard
  1. Step 1

Lay onesie flat on work table. Cut straight across bottom, above where snaps are, to make a shirt. Discard bottom of onesie.

  2. Step 2

Pin white lace trim onto wrong side of shirt hem and machine stitch or hand sew into place. Turn onesie right side out and stitch a layer of black lace above it. Attach black lace trim to both sleeves as shown in picture, either by hand or with machine. Sew white lace "collar" along neckline, on right side. Sew red pom poms over the white lace, as pictured.

  3. Step 3

Position bowling pin patch onto front of onesie and pin. Machine or hand stitch into place.

Cut out child's name from material scraps, as pictured below, either freehand or by tracing the letters onto a piece of cardboard, cutting them out and then using that as a stencil on the fabric. Attach each letter to the back of the onesie with dressmakers pins. Hand sew into place.

  5. Step 5

Trim any loose threads and remove pins. Press garment gently with warm iron, if needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can also purchase a stencil for about $1 at Michaels or other craft stores to make the letters for the child's name.
  • Patches are available at fabric stores such as JoAnn Fabrics as well as WalMart and Michael's.
  • Don't toss this into the washing machine; turn inside out and hand wash. Tumble dry on low.
