Floors and carpets see some disgusting things. Unfortunately, many of these things emit odors such as smoke, urine, pet odor, and mildew. Floors are exposed to each and everything that touches the bottoms of our soles. Whether that means dog feces, mud, beer, or bugs, smell is imminent. While some people can stomach nasty odors, most can't stand them. Some floor odors just make you feel sick. No matter how badly a floor smells, however, there is a way to eliminate the problem. This guide will teach you how to get rid of bad smells radiating from your floors. Some tips take little effort while others require a bit of work. Either way, your floors will smell fresh once again.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open all the windows in the home for 24 hours. If it is cold outside, turn off the thermostat and leave the house while it airs. Most odors will be eliminated during this step. The remaining odors are substantially more pungent.

  2. Step 2

Scatter baking soda all over the carpet and then vacuum. Baking soda is known for it's amazing ability to neutralize odors. It is commonly used in refrigerators to eliminate lingering take-out food. It can work in the same way on your carpet.

  3. Step 3

Mop a stinky kitchen or bathroom floor with a mixture of half vinegar and half water. Although vinegar has a strong smell, it completely disappears once it has dried. You will be left with a clean and fresh smelling floor.

  4. Step 4

Scrub your basement floor with the same half vinegar and half water solution. You may need to scrub on your hands and knees with a tough sponge to really dig into the mildew. After you are done, run a dehumidifier to get rid of the mildew smell. This will also prevent additional mildew from forming.

  5. Step 5

Purchase an ionization machine and strategically place it in your stinkiest room. These machines emit negatively charged ions into the air. This helps purify and neutralize odors. It works just like lightening in a thunderstorm. It is nature's way of cleaning and neutralizing the air. Since homes are so air tight now-a-days, lightening simply does not work for air inside. A synthetic ionization machine is needed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Leave baking soda overnight on extra stinky carpet before vacuuming.
  • Smoke smells should not be removed with standard cleaning products. The smell may temporarily disappear, but future tar will stick to the products' residue making the odor problem even worse.
