How to Create a Permanent Grocery List

Heading off to the grocery store without a list is pretty much a guarantee that you won’t get everything you need. Equally dismal is that you’ll end up spending money on stuff you really don’t need. Writing out a grocery list is such a tedious process. If you can find the time make one master list, all you’ll need to do for every trip to the grocery store is to put a check mark next to the items you need--and off you go.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Keep track of everything you buy over the next month. Many stores print the names of the items you’ve purchased right on the receipts, so that’s a good place to start. Keep those sale slips and all the lists you make together. At the end of the month, make another list of everything in your cabinets. Yes, this will take time, but you’ll see later that it will be well worth the effort.
Step2
Using colored markers or pencils, begin circling items on the lists and receipts. For example, circle all dairy items in red, all fresh fruits and vegetables in green, and assign each group a color code.
Step3
Type up all the items in their appropriate categories. Use columns and put a heading at the top of each grouping to make it easier to find items once you’re at the store.
Step4
Print out a couple of lists to try out your work. Add items you’ve forgotten. Revise and organize the list according to ease of shopping in your current grocery store. Creating a list that circles your store in convenience is ideal if you always shop at the same store.
Step5
Make several dozen lists on some bright colored paper—this will help keep the list from going missing in the bottom of your purse.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have fun with the list. Shopping should be a pleasure. Do what it takes the make the list a fun addition to your shopping experience.
  • Don't get too obsessed with sticking to the list. Allow a grocery change and splurge once a month.
