Spotting a perfectionist is relatively simple once you know what you look for. Not all perfectionists spend their time cleaning stains and picking lint off their jackets. Instead, look for someone who appears uncomfortable when things are out of place.

How to Spot a Perfectionist

Step1
Because every perfectionist is an individual and therefore has unique traits and tendencies, the only way to spot a perfectionist is to see if he displays the same general attributes that are generally exhibited by perfectionists. Look for signs that he is attempting to present a perfect image that is flawless and without fault. Does he have an impeccable outfit that is devoid of any stains or wrinkles? Does he constantly check to make sure that the outfit looks great? This is a reliable indication that the person has perfectionist tendencies.
Step2
Look at how the person interacts with other people. Does he seem to try hard to portray a certain image of perfection? Some perfectionists are consumed by how other people view them. It may be difficult for a perfectionist to admit fault, even when it is obvious that he is in the wrong. If the behavior seems beyond steadfast and borders on stubborn, hemay be a perfectionist.
Step3
Be aware that perfectionists are often critical of the people around them. They may not even realize that they are acting harshly toward other people, but this is a trait that plenty of perfectionists display. When dealing with a perfectionist, you can expect that nothing you do will ever be good enough. For example, if your boss always finds fault with your work regardless of how much effort you put into it, he may be a perfectionist.
Step4
Look for signs that the person is not content. By nature, perfectionists are unhappy with themselves and often strive for perfection as a means to elevate their own self esteem. Even though a perfectionist may outwardly appear to be in complete control, on the inside he may be constantly wondering and worrying if the people around him are critiquing him based on his appearance, behavior, and accomplishments.
Step5
Listen to the things the person says. Some people readily admit their perfectionist tendencies by saying things like, "I can't stand when things are out of place!" or "I will never give up until I get it right." Since some perfectionists display their tendencies more overtly through their behavior as opposed to their appearance, it's important to listen carefully to the things a person says when trying to spot a perfectionist.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't assume that a person is a perfectionist simply because he is impeccably dressed because there is more to it than that.
  • Some people may get offended by being branded as a perfectionist.
