1
Find an area to set up. Look for shade and natural cover, which attracts fish and protects you from the sun. Use sunscreen and a hat to prevent sunburn, which can make your excursion much less enjoyable.
-
2
Set up your rig and cast your line. Depending on what you intend to catch, you may want to use a bobber or weight your line. Similarly, your intended catch can change what you should use for bait or influence your decision to use a lure.

When the fish bites, reel it in and keep it or toss it back. Before you decide to keep it, know what the limits are on what you can keep. Be aware of invasive species in the area for the opposite reason--if you catch them, you may have to report them to a fish and game official or destroy them.
