The Morning After The Morning After

You and the person you’ve been seeing have finally sealed the deal and had sex for the first time and now you’ve found yourself in that awkward morning after moment. If your pre-existing relationship is a relatively new one, there is bound to be a slight tension that wouldn’t exist in a longer romance, but if you can picture the development of a longer relationship, you’ll want to play your cards right in order to keep yours and your partner's nerves free and clear. Here’s how to navigate the murky waters of the morning after with grace and success.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Extra toothbrush
  • Water
  • Glass for water
  • Coffee
  • Breakfast foods
  • Condoms
  • Clean towels

Behave Respectfully

Step1
Show respect. If you make eye contact, do not then try to close your eyes and pretend to be asleep. The jig is up. Be mature and courteous. Smile and say good morning.
Step2
Be courteous. When you first wake up, go to the bathroom and brush your teeth. Bring a glass of water to your partner or if they’re still sleeping leave it on the bedside table for when they wake up. If they can’t brush, water is the next best thing.
Step3
Eat. Suggest going out to breakfast. Brunch--including bloody mary’s, mimosa’s and/or bellini’s--will help you both calm your nerves. Most couples that decide to take it to the next level are very comfortable "dating" so this will help you get back to that comfortable dating zone you were so good at.
Step4
Stay in. If you’d rather stay in and play alone with your mate, offer to go out for bagels and coffee instead. This will give you both some time to think about the night's events without the pressure of immediately jumping into a conversation.
Step5
Make breakfast. If you want to stay in and don't want to leave for bagels either you can offer to cook breakfast. This will still give you a chance to separate for a bit and avoid the awkward silences and show her what a great cook you are or him how domestic and caring you are.
Step6
Hop in the shower. Before going out for breakfast or after breakfast, if you’re staying in, jump in the shower. With luck they’ll join you. If not, keep it short and offer them a towel and the shower as well.
Step7
Talk about it. Once you’ve gotten past the initial nerves of the post coital, tell them how amazing last night was and be specific about what you liked. The more comfortable and open you are about discussing the night with your partner the more comfortable they'll be discussing it with you. Sex should not be an untouchable subject and if you plan on starting a relationship with this person, you should show them how comfortable you are with them.
Step8
Brush your teeth. You should have an extra toothbrush on hand that you can give to your partner. This shouldn’t be the first thing you do as it may seem suggestive of their morning breath, but it will be nice for both of you to be able to brush. The toothbrush must be clean, new and wrapped.
Step9
Get comfortable. Offer some clean and comfortable clothes like a t-shirt, boxers or sweatshirt. Do not give them anything that an ex may have left.
Step10
Make plans. It’s okay to make very light and general plans for the near future. Don’t get ahead of yourself by talking about meeting the parents or future holiday plans, but making a date for the next day or the following weekend is a perfectly reasonable expectation.
Step11
Be yourself and act normal. Don’t act as if nothing has changed, because something significant has happened in your relationship, but there is a reason you’ve found yourself in this spot and that’s because you both liked each others company enough to take it to the next level.

Tips & Warnings

  • DO make eye contact.
  • Flirt and touch.
  • Be yourself.
  • Do not smoke a cigarette in bed. Not only is this tiredly cliche, it's just gross. If you need a cigarette post-coital, go outside to smoke it.
  • Don't talk about numbers or previous conquests. This will have your new flame running, full speed, for the door.
