When you hear a horrible racket from your laundry room, most likely the culprit is your washing machine. A banging washing machine is normally nothing more to worry about than an unbalanced load. It can be a bit shocking to find your washing machine literally "walking" across the floor, though, as a result of imbalance. Learn how to fix a banging washing machine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Long arms or tongs
Step1
Turn the washing machine off. Even if it's in mid-cycle, you need to turn off the machine and reset it to correct the cause of the banging.
Step2
Open the washing machine door. Look in the door, and you will most likely find that the majority of clothing or bedding has gathered on one side of the washing machine bin. Grab the clothes or bedding that is batched on one side and redistribute it. Make sure that the cloth is evenly spread out around the washing machine tub.
Step3
Drain the washing machine. Even if you have a machine that can resume the washing cycle where it was interrupted, your clothes or bedding may not have been washed properly as a result of the load imbalance. To drain the washing machine, simply run it on "rinse" or "spin."
Step4
Rewash the load. However, you do not need to add new laundry detergent or fabric softener.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the washing machine became unbalanced because there were too few clothes, add a few extra items to help the machine to maintain balance.
  • Don't overload a machine; this can cause imbalances and banging as well.
