For this paper doll kit, the folder is sewn on a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch, finished with seam binding to resemble a book.Doll clothing is made from pictures taken from craft books, with straps glued on the side with extra bits of paper. The doll was drawn freehand and then cut out and assembled. The result is a one-of-a-kind kit.

  • 1 8-by-10 inch construction paper

  • 12-inches of 2-inch seam binding
  • Pictures of clothing from catalog or magazines

  • White glue or glue gun
  • Sewing machine (optional)

How to Make a Paper Doll Kit

  1. Step 1

Use a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch to sew together two index cards to form the book "front". Repeat with another 2 cards. Now sew or glue another index card onto the bottom inside of both front and back to form a pocket for paper dolls. Set aside.

  2. Step 2

Trace a simple paper-doll shape onto the colored construction paper and cut out. Embellish with yarn, trim, and sequins, if desired. Set doll aside.

  3. Step 3

Join the book "front" and "back" together by sewing a length of seam binding down the left hand side to form the book "spine." If you're using glue, just glue the front and back together. Glue or machine stitch the paper doll onto the front cover.

  4. Step 4

Go through your catalogs, magazine, or craft book and cut out clothing pictures, as pictured. Snip extra pieces of paper from the books to use as tags and attach with glue gun or craft glue onto each piece, as pictured. Cut out doll shape either from an index card or from pages of a heavy, coffee-table type picture book .

Assemble kit by placing doll on the inside left "pocket" and doll clothes on the inside right "pocket." Your kit is now complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use magazine paper to cut out the doll--it's too flimsy. Cardboard, posterboard, or even the front of a cereal box works fine.
  • If you're giving this to a preschooler, don't embellish the paper doll on front with little buttons, pearls or tiny beads.
