How to Organize kids' toys

Chaos is a result of a lack of organization. Just remember that when your kids are jumping all over the place, the noise level seems to be skyrocketing, and there are toys, toys, toys everywhere! Here are a few steps to help organize that chaos...

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic containers (6.5 qt)
  • One large container per child (28 qt)
  • Craft supplies to decorate with (paint, glitter, glue)
  • Shelf with cubby holes or a dresser.

Instructions

  1. And Mom took chaos and organized. And it was good.

First, with your kids in tow, go to the store to buy as many plastic see-through containers as necessary. Rubbermaid makes a great series called Clear Impressions, which can be purchased at Wal Mart.

    • 2

Buy at least one 28-quart see-through container with lid. Then buy as many six-quart containers (or 5x8x14, roughly) as you may need to fill with toys.

    • 3

Once you get home, sit down with your kids and divide the toys into groupings. Then put those groupings into their own container. For instance, all of the superhero toys go in one. The doll stuff goes in another. The balls over here in this one and on and on.

    • 4

Snap the lid on and write on the outside the name of the box (e.g. "Superheroes). Note: This is a great way to help kids learn their letters and reading, too.

    • 5

Now, have each child take the large container. This is their "Special Box." It can be filled with any toy that is theirs, or anything they want. Have them fill it up and write their name on it.

    • 6

Have them decorate their container with paint, glitter, puffy paint, sticker, etc.

    • 7

Law down the law: When a box of toys is done being played with, they are responsible for putting the toys back in before they get out another box, or two other boxes, or how many ever they need. As many people as played with the toys pitches in. Likewise, the same rule applies for their special box, except only that individual is responsible for those toys.

These containers can be stacked one on top of the other, or if you have a storage shelf with cubby holes or a standard clothes dresser, you can place these inside so as to keep them nice and tidy. The large containers can go in the children's individual rooms.
