Everyone lately seems to be doing a switch from processed flour products to whole wheat, and pasta is no exception. Most pasta brands are also offering more and more whole wheat options, but what fun is buying whole wheat pasta when you can make it at home. Here is a delicious recipe to make your own whole wheat pasta at home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Whole wheat flour
  • Sea salt
  • Olive oil
  • Eggs
  • Pasta press
  • Mixing bowl
  1. Step 1

Your first step to making homemade whole wheat pasta is to combine 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour, 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, and 1/2 tsp. sea salt into a mixing bowl. Mix these dry ingredients together until everything is evenly incorporated.

  2. Step 2

Next we want to make a shallow hole within the flour mixture and add 2 tsp. of olive oil into the hole. You can use just about any type of olive oil that you like.

  3. Step 3

Next, crack four eggs, one at a time, into the mixture the whole time mixing vigorously with a fork until the whole wheat mixture is wet enough to start coming together.

  4. Step 4

Next we want to start kneading the whole wheat dough on a slightly floured surface to keep the dough from sticking to the board. Be sure and wash your hands first, and always kneed your dough on a well washed and clean surface. You will want to continue doing this until your dough has a stiff, yet elastic surface to it. If you want to save time you can kneed your dough in a bread maker, just make sure you don't have it set to bake or you will end up with an interesting loaf of bread.

  5. Step 5

Next feed your dough through your pasta machine to desired type and thickness. If you do not have a pasta machine they really are not that expensive anymore to buy. You can also do it the old fashioned way by hand rolling it to your desired thickness and hand slicing it with a knife.

  6. Step 6

Let your pasta dry for at least a half hour before cooking it to avoid clumping, and then throw it into a pot of salted boiling water. Your pasta will be done when it floats.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add your favorite sauces, cheeses and vegetables to your pasta for a great and healthy main dish your whole family will love. You can even make homemade macaroni and cheese for the kids with this whole wheat pasta.
