Ticks can be a troublesome pest to both humans and animals. Some ticks can even carry Lyme disease, which can cause major health issues in people. If you pets are having a problem with tick infestations, here's what you can do to solve the problem.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prevent tick bites. If you are walking your dog or hiking, avoid tall grass and brush where ticks are likely to be waiting for someone to walk by. Wear pants and socks. Keep your animal on a leash and away from fields.

  2. Step 2

Use tick repellent. Spray yourself and your animal with tick repellent if you cannot avoid fields, grass or other tick infested areas.

  3. Step 3

Use a monthly treatment on your pets. Using a monthly product like Frontline or Advantage will help prevent your animals from getting ticks in the first place.

  4. Step 4

Examine your pets frequently. Brush your animal's coat after walking and remove any fleas and ticks it might have gathered. Frequently check your dog's armpits, stomach, ears and other soft, unprotected areas that ticks like.

  5. Step 5

To remove a tick once it is attached, place tweezers on either side of the tick's body. Heat a needle or pin with a flame and touch it to the tick, causing the head to pull out of the skin. Use the tweezers to firmly remove the tick.

  6. Step 6

Bathe your animals frequently to remove ticks and their eggs.

  7. Step 7

If you have problems with ticks in your yard, consider pruning back and removing all brush and non-essential plant life.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check the dosage of tick medications for your animal's weight.
