Professor Severus Snape is one of the most loved, and at the same time most hated, characters in the famous series "Harry Potter," written by J.K. Rowling. Whether you see him as a good guy or a bad guy, he is a wonderful choice when looking for costume ideas. His costume is easy to make and at the same time it's a lot of fun to get into character.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Black cape
  • Wand (optional)
  • Black boots
  • Black pants
  • Black shirt
  • Black trench coat (optional)
  • Wig or hair dye
  • Black eyeshadow (optional)
  • Pale make-up (optional)
  1. Step 1

Get a black outfit to wear underneath the costume itself. Your shirt won't be as visible as your pants, but if you decide to wear a cloak that is more open at the top, you'll definitely want your shirt to be black. Use a black long-sleeved shirt and tight black pants. Black denim stretch pants work well for women and black dress pants work for men. Though it's optional, a plain black trench coat that hangs to your knees works wonders at creating a sinister look. A cheap pair of black boots will finish off this part of your costume nicely.

  2. Step 2

Of course you'll need a black cloak or cape. While there are plenty for sale around Halloween, spend the majority of your money on the perfect cape as this is what really gives Professor Snape his menacing aura. You want it to be solid black, and a collar would help. Make sure to leave the collar turned up around your neck. Some things to look for in the perfect cape is that it be black, long enough to twirl or wrap around yourself, definitely not sparkly and that it's not so long you trip over it when you walk. It's not necessary, but if you really want, try to find one in the same shade of black as the rest of your outfit.

  3. Step 3

After you have all your clothes together, then you're ready to fix your hair. Professor Snape has long black hair that almost touches his shoulders. You have two options here. If you have longer hair, and you're feeling adventurous, dye it jet black. Then all you need to do is straighten it and let it hang freely. Don't worry about making it look perfect; his signature look is oily and unkempt. If you don't want to go to such extremes as using dye, you can buy a wig. Pull your hair back in a ponytail, and use bobby pins to secure loose pieces until it's piled on top of your head. Then pull the wig firmly over your real hair and tuck any strands that are still visible firmly into the wig.

  4. Step 4

Go for the finishing touches. If you want to do make up, put a tiny dab of black eye shadow underneath your eyes and lots of pale powder on your face. This creates a sallow look. You may want to add a wand to your costume as well. You can either buy one from a costume store, or simply find a stick out in the woods. While these can be a nice touch to your costume, they are by no means necessary to create Professor Snape. To truly have a great costume, all you need is the attitude. Make sure to hold yourself high, as if you think you're better than everyone else. Stalk around with your arms crossed, and make sure to whirl your cloak when you leave a room. Never smile at anyone because, remember, you are superior to them.
