How to Use Creative Visualization to Relax

Creative visualization uses the imagination in conjunction with the body. By means of visual association we can become more aware of the flux of energy that is a necessary part of our physical self. In order to do this we must realize that the physical and the mental are two aspects of the same. The bridging of this division is the key to meditation and to self awareness.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Time to practice
    • A comfortable, quiet place to sit or lie
      • 1

Lie comfortably and breathe slowly and deeply. Imagine that you are walking along a sun-drenched beach with warm golden sand beneath your feet. The sand stretches endlessly ahead of you and behind you. You have the beach all to yourself. On one side of you are large golden dunes, speckled with brightly colored shells and vivid green seaweed. On the other side is the gently lapping ocean. The sun is high in the sky and feels very warm and relaxing on your skin. Occasionally you hear the call of seabirds over your head.

      • 2

You walk to the edge of the gently lapping ocean and lie down at the water’s edge. The damp, warm sand fits snugly around the contours of your body. The ocean laps lightly against your feet, soothing and refreshing.

      • 3

You close your eyes and relax into the warm sand, allowing the creeping tide to eddy over your feet and legs then gently slip away, only to slowly to return with its warm caress, refreshing your sun-warmed body. Each time the tide swirls away it draws your tensions with it, casting them onto the ocean.

      • 4

Listen to the rhythm of your breathing and the regular beat of your heart as it beats in time to the gently lapping ocean.

      • 5

Once you have finished with your creative visualization, slowly move your arms and legs around a little. Open your eyes and when you feel ready sit up. You should now feel relaxed and refreshed.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you are having trouble working through the visualization, record yourself reading the guided imagery or download some other guided imagery exercises.

    • As you become more practiced you will be able to easily create your own visualizations scenes, or use some from your memory, such as an enjoyable vacation or a relaxing massage.
