  • Potting compost
  • Bulb planter

    How to Grow Hyacinth

  1. Step 1

When choosing your hyacinth and where to plant them remember that the larger the bulb, the bigger the flower will be. Also bear in mind when you are deciding where to plant them that these plants can grow up to 12 inches tall.

  2. Step 2

Hyacinths thrive in zones 4 to 8. If you are planting them outdoors, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant them at least 6 inches apart and at 2.5 times their own depth.

  3. Step 3

If you are planting them indoors use a bowl or pots with good drainage and a potting compost designed for bulbs.

  4. Step 4

Feed your plants with a fertilizer designed specially for bulbs, that way you can be sure that it is correctly balanced.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the soil is acidic where you are planting your hyacinth, amend it with a little lime.
  • You can force hyacinth to root by resting the bulb at the top of a small mouth jar. Fill 2/3 of the jar with water but do not let the bulb rest in the water or it will rot.
  • Placing the jar and bulb in the refrigerator to chill it can also speed up the root growth.
  • Alternatively you can place them in another dark place where the temperature will not rise above 50F.
  • After your forced hyacinth has flowered, plant it in the garden and it will flower again the following year.
  • Do not over water. If hyacinth bulbs get too wet they have a tendency to rot very quickly.
  • Full sunlight throughout the day will make your hyacinth bloom fade early.
