Have the painting contractors you select inspect the site and quote a price for the job. Make sure the contractors are quoting on the same specifications: areas to be painted, number of coats and so on. At this point you can ask them for references. Painters are most likely to point you in the direction of their most recent jobs. While this may be convenient for them, examining some of their past work will allow you to judge how their workmanship has weathered over time. Try to inspect a job that was done at least a couple of years ago.

You should find our information that will directly influence your choice of painter. Were the customers happy with the job? Was the work finished in a timely manner? Was the painter clean and careful? Did the painter use any specialized techniques (such as sponging or other customized design)? Did the painter keep to budget? Would they hire him again?

Take time to examine the work for flaws such as wobbly brush marks, paint splatter, clean edges around windows, check for signs of over-spray and spillage.
