Learning to breathe properly is a key objective for all singers; so much so that without it, your vocals will suffer and your voice will waiver. Breathing exercises abound, and each performer has their favorites. In this article, we're going to take a look at a very basic, simple breathing method to help you gain better control over your diaphragm and increase the amount of air you intake with each breath.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Just yourself
  1. Step 1

Start with a warm-up breath by simply taking a deep breath in through your nostrils.

  2. Step 2

Let the breath out, exhaling completely.

  3. Step 3

Next, inhale again, only this time, count to four as you breathe in.

  4. Step 4

Hold your breath to the count of four.

  5. Step 5

Now, breathe out for four counts.

  6. Step 6

Repeat this exercise three to four times.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're breathing properly, your ribs and back will move and expand, and your shoulders and chest will stay still.
  • Practice this exercise daily. As you get better, you can increase the number of counts on each breath.
  • Please keep in mind that this can result in a feeling of dizziness the first few times you practice this exercise as your body gets used to the extra oxygen. It may be wise to stand near a chair or counter that you can use to steady yourself in case this happens.
