Tap dancing is a great form of exercise for both those who have been dancing for years and those who have never danced before. It's basically all about your feet and legs. The most simple step, the flap, is necessary to learn as it is used extensively in tap routines and combinations. Here is how to do a flap.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tap shoes
  • Hardwood floor or other hard, smooth flooring
  1. Step 1

Start standing on the balls of your feet. Now, to clarify, not on your toes, just casually on the balls. Now, pick up your right foot and brush the ball tap across the floor quickly so there is a brief tap sound. The foot shouldn't drag, just quickly brush the floor. Make sure your that the toe of your shoe and the heel tap don't touch the floor.

  2. Step 2

Step on your right foot. You have just done a brush step. This is a flap. Repeat on the left side. Pick up your left foot and quickly brush the ball tap on the floor then step on your left foot. This is another flap.

  3. Step 3

To do flaps quickly you simply stay high on the balls of your feet and keep your brush steps small but swift. The faster you go the more it starts to feel like you're almost hopping. But be sure to get every tap in there. You're ready to start tapping.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the ball of your foot for the taps.
  • Don't allow your heels to touch the floor.
