Things You'll Need:
- Newspaper with want ad section
- Local phone book
- Internet connection
-
Step 1
Start with the want ad section of your newspaper, especially Sunday's edition. Most Sunday newspapers have more want ads than other days. Don't just look at the want ads under the subheading of your career choice. For example, sometimes, management positions, where you may easily meet the qualifications, are listed under the subheadings of health care or professional openings. Scan all the ads, circle any that interest you, and then go back and review your circled choices. Apply for positions that still interest you when reading them a second time.
-
Step 2
Search your local phone book for companies you would love to work for. Call and ask if they are accepting applications or if they have any open positions. Sometimes, companies will accept resumes to keep on file even if they have no current openings.
-
Step 3
Look to your local chamber of commerce. The chamber of commerce is another place to look for businesses and companies in your community that may have local job openings. Many have their own websites that list their members. Most of these businesses will probably be listed in the phone book also, but the chamber of commerce site may tell you more about their business or list a website for you to check out. Again, you can call these businesses or check out their websites for application procedures or current, local job openings.
-
Step 4
Check out Craigslist. Click on your state and then on your community once you are in the site. This will take you to a screen where you will see the subheading, "Jobs." Under the heading, several career fields are listed. Click on yours to find local job openings.
-
Step 5
Hunt in websites such as Monster or CareerBuilder. These sites do list local jobs. On the home page of Monster, you can enter your career field and city name to find current open positions. You will be directed to a new screen with a list of open positions. The same is true about the home page of CareerBuilder.
-
Step 6
Call your local college or university career centers, and see if they can help in your local job search, especially if you graduated from one. Many career centers have on-line want ads, and sometimes, you do not have to be a student or graduate to view these. Some of the jobs listed will be nationwide, but there will be local jobs, also.
