Tourist are usually the target for thieves and attacks. Don't stick out like a sore thumb, instead enjoy your vacation. Unfortunately some tourist visit Hawaii with the hope of looking and fitting in and do the exact opposite. Don't make these mistakes.
How to Look like a Local in Hawaii
If you want to look like a local you need to start dressing like one. Do not wear loud tacky aloha shirts. Avoid these at all costs. Instead visit local surf shops like Local Motion, HIC and T & C. Purchase T-shirts and dress shirts from these places and wear with your shorts or purchase a pair there as well to match.
Do not rent a convertible or flashy sports car. Not many locals drive a corvette or mustang so steer clear of them. Instead rent a truck or compact car like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Convertible just screams tourist.
Don't wear aqua socks or dress shoes with your beach wear. Stop at the local Wal Mart or surf shop and pick up a pair of slippers or flip-flops as many may call it.
Don't tuck your shirt into your surf shorts. They are not dress shorts and you are on vacation so there is no need to look dressy. Leave the shirt untucked.
Don't stare at people. Local people do not stare at others nor do they like being stared at. Staring is a sign of a confrontation and unless you are ready to get into a fight I would avoid staring.
