Scalp lighteners are some of the mildest type of lighteners and are use primarily when only 1 or 2 levels of color are being lifted. When you are finished with this article, you will be able to lighten your hair with salon results.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Oil or Cream lightener
  • Activator such as hydrogen peroxide or developing cream
  • Applicator Bottle or applicator brush
  • Mixing bowl if using applicator brush
  • Rat Tail Comb
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Towels for drying
  • Sink
  • Water
  • Clock or watch for timing
  1. Step 1

Gather your materials needed and set up your work space. You will want all of your materials close at hand so you don't have to run around finding materials and over process your hair while doing so.

  2. Step 2

Begin by mixing your cream or oil lightener as recommended by the package and performing a strand test to determine the time the solution should be left on your hair to achieve the desired color.

  3. Step 3

Once the cream is mixed, if you are using an applicator bottle, begin with the area that is most resistant to change. This would be your crown of your head.

  4. Step 4

Part off a small section of hair about 1/4 of an inch thick and 3 to 4 inches wide. Gently squeeze a bead of the solution onto the scalp area. Making sure you get enough solution on the scalp, gently rub it through the sectioned off strand to the end. If you are using a mixing bowl and applicator brush, make sure you brush the solution all the way to the scalp of the strand and then to the end.

  5. Step 5

Repeat this process for the entire head of hair. Let process according to the time of your strand test. Rinse thoroughly when processing is completed. Shampoo and condition as usual. Towel dry and style.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you follow the processing time exactly. Be careful not to leave the solution in too long.
  • Do not leave the solution on longer than the strand test indicated. Hair can become gummy and literally fall out!
