Step 1
Becoming a New York City firefighter for civilians happens every three to four years. In order to apply for the job you must be a New York resident for five years, be at least 21 and have a valid driver’s license. There is a physical exam, background check, and a written exam. There must be a steady work history for at least six months to apply.

Step 2
Both the written and physical exam is crucial to becoming a firefighter. The written exam topics are reading comprehension, problem solving, spatial recognition and general rules. There is a tutorial to prepare you for the written exam. Depending on the performance on the physical and written test your name will be place on the civil service list.

Step 3
The fire department will contact you based on your list number and the actual need for firefighters. This entire process can take anywhere from two to four years. After your number is called, a medical and psychological test will be performed along with a background check. This will then determine the eligibility to become a firefighter with New York fire department.

Step 4
After becoming a firefighter while on probation you must receive a Certified First Responder with Defibrillation certification.First-year Firefighters who do not have this certification will be provided with training at your own expense.
