How to Write a Resume for a School Administrator Job

School administrator jobs are more competitive than ever before, and many school districts are beginning to hire from within rather than seeking outside candidates. However, your resume can increase your chances of getting hired, and the way you write it will determine whether or not you impress the interviewer.

Instructions

    • 1

Summarize your experience and your objectives in the top section of your resume. Explain why you want to be a school administrator at this particular institution, and what experience qualifies you for such a position. This can be written in paragraph form with the title "Summary."

    • 2

Detail your professional experience in education and administration. Even if you're moving up to the position of school administrator, any teaching or supervisory experience will be helpful here. Include the dates of employment, the name of your direct supervisor and your responsibilities.

    • 3

Include a separate section for extra-curricular experience, such as coaching or leading a debate team. This demonstrates your leadership abilities and will also tell the school whether you want to participate in school activities as well as administration.

    • 4

List your education credits, starting with your most recent degree. Include the name of the school, the degree or certification earned, and any pertinent courses you took. Make sure you list the credits that will make you most attractive for a school administrator job. Some people also include their GPAs, but this isn't necessary.

    • 5

Write down a list of any other activities you have participated in, such as volunteering or continued education. Just make sure that this is written separately from your professional experience.

    • 6

Include another section to list your skills, such as the computer programs you are familiar with, or the languages you speak. Again, these should be related to a school administrator job, so your ability to juggle apples doesn't apply.

    • 7

List the publications in which your articles or essays have been published, particularly if they have to do with education or school administration. This shows that you are concerned about improving the integrity of your profession, and that you are interested in learning more about the subject.

    • 8

Compile a list of the organizations of which you are a member, as well as any awards or honors you have received over the course of your career. List the dates of membership or receipt of the awards, and any other pertinent information.

Tips & Warnings

  • Format your resume for a school administration job with plenty of white space, and on clean, high-quality paper.

  • Include a cover letter that describes your experience in school administration, as well as why you feel you would be best for the position.

  • Don't allow your resume to exceed one page.
