Things You'll Need:
- Sticker labels for pricing
- Ink pen
- Balloons and/or ribbon streamers
- Large yard sale signs
-
Step 1
Watch the weather report. You definitely need to keep an eye on the weather forecast for the day you have chosen for your yard sale. This is important for the obvious reasons. While there are a few die hard people who are willing to visit a sale in the rain, most people are not likely to do so. If you cannot change the day of the sale but there is a rain that is forecast for that day, it is smart to have an alternative plan. For example, it's a good idea to keep at least some of the stuff inside your garage, and make it easy to move the rest inside at a moment's notice. Or you can set up a large outdoor open-sided canopy and display all the items beneath it.
-
Step 2
Collect clean items for the sale. When you gather up the stuff for your yard sale, make sure that it is clean. Nobody wants to buy things that are full of spider webs and dead flies or so dusty you don't even want to touch it. Take the extra time to at least dust the items you plan to sell so that they are reasonably presentable. This will make a considerable difference at the time of the sale.
-
Step 3
Price every item, no matter how small, unless you plan to place the item into a box with other similar items and place a blanket price on the box itself. This eliminates the need for the customer to have to ask what the price is for each item. This works well as long as the person or persons running the sale are aware of the price of the item and can quickly write it down when the purchase is made.
-
Step 4
Spread your items around on several tables rather than putting it all on one table. This gives the appearance that you have more stuff to sell and people are more likely to stop at your sale if it is large and has a lot of variety. If you do not have a lot of items to sell ask a friend, relative or neighbor if they would like to contribute. The more the better as far as attracting customers is concerned.
-
Step 5
Put a large, clearly written sign by the side of the road or along the street where you live. Attach balloons or colorful ribbons to it so that it can't be missed, and you should have a lot of people coming to your sale. You can also advertise in your local newspaper but that is expensive and you might end up spending more for advertising than what you actually make at the sale.

on 10/10/2008 Awesome tips. Garage sales, yard sales, and ebay are all awesome places to unload something you no longer want but that someone SOMEWHERE will pay good money to have clutter up their own home. It's always amazing what people will pay good money for :-)
