How to Make Creamed Cabbage and Potatoes

This traditional dish is often served around Christmas, and there's an old custom that says if you serve it on Christmas Even, you'll have good luck. This is usually served with salmon or halibut fish, but it is a delicious meal at anytime.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 head of cabbage
  • 1 can of evaporated milk
  • 1 can of water
  • 3 tbsp. flour
  • 1/3 cup of butter
  • 2 tbsp. salt
  • 6 potatoes (boiled)
  • 1 sharp chopping knife
  • 1 potato peeler
  • 2 large pots
  • 1 saute pan
  1. Step 1

    Chop the cabbage by hand with the knife.

  2. Step 2

    Peel and prepare the potatoes for boiling; put in a water-filled pot and boil 20 for 25 minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Put chopped cabbage in the other water-filled pot and boil about 15 or 20 minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Melt the butter in saute pan. Sprinkle in flour while stirring butter, until smooth.

  5. Step 5

    Add milk, water and salt; stirring constantly until mixture is smooth.

  6. Step 6

    Drain the water out of the cabbage. Cabbage should not be over- or under-cooked.

  7. Step 7

    Pour the creamed milk gravy into the cooked cabbage. Stir and serve over the boiled potatoes.
