Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Climbing harnesses
  1. Step 1

Head to a sporting goods store that sells climbing gear. Select a harness and try it on.

  2. Step 2

Check the fit of the waist belt. It should be situated at the narrowest part of your waist and should be snug, but not uncomfortably so. If your weight fluctuates, be sure to select a harness that can be tightened and loosened around the waist. Do not purchase a harness if you are wearing it at its absolute tightest or loosest.

  3. Step 3

Check the leg loops. Like the waist, they should be snug but not uncomfortable. If they are adjustable, be certain to have a couple inches of slack when secured.

  4. Step 4

Try on several different harnesses, comparing the fit and comfort level. Many stores that sell harnesses will give you the option to tie into a rope and hang in the harness. Take advantage of this option if it is available.

  5. Step 5

Choose the harness that feels the most comfortable and secure and make certain you know how all the clips and tying in works. Not all harnesses use the same system.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most sports stores that sell climbing gear employ knowledgeable staff members. Remember that they are there to help so do not hesitate to ask them for advice.
  • Special harnesses exist for women, if you are a women be sure to test a mix of women's harnesses and unisex. Depending on your body type, one or the other may be a better fit.
