The simplest way to tie a winter scarf, known as the Italian Loop, is to fold the scarf in half and put it around your neck. Pull the ends through the loop and pull it tight. You can make it as loose or as tight as you would like. You can use this knot over or under your coat.

Tie a square knot. Wrap your scarf around your neck so one end is longer than the other. Wrap the longer end all the way around your neck, around the shorter end, then pull it up and through. Pull it to make it tight. The tighter you pull it, the warmer it will be. This, too, can be worn over or under your coat.

For a variation of the square knot, wrap your scarf around your neck so the ends hang down your back, then pull both ends forward so they've wrapped all the way around your neck. From there, tie one end through the other and put your coat on over it.
