Breakdancing was introduced in the 1980's. Since then, the highly athletic dance style has caused its fair share of broken bones, strained muscles and bruised bodies. Whether you are just learning to breakdance or you have been doing it for years, the best way to avoid injury is to prepare and protect the parts of your body that are most susceptible to breakdancing-related injury.

  1. Step 1

    Wrap your wrists. In breakdancing, the entire weight of your body may be balanced on a single palm, which can cause a great deal of strain on your wrists. In order to give your wrists additional support, wrap them tightly using a criss-cross pattern with an elastic athletic wrap or tape. You can also purchase wrist support bands at most drugstores for under five dollars.

    Powder your hands. In order to prevent straining your wrists while doing spins, powder your palms to make them slide on the floor or mat more easily.

  3. Step 3

    Wear gloves. Gloves can also facilitate sliding and prevent your wrists from twisting the wrong way during a spin.

    Lift weights. Hold one dumbbell in each hand with your palms facing up. Relax your wrists, then curl them up as far as possible. Repeat this exercise as many times as you can.

  • If you are just learning to breakdance, you should work with an experienced breakdancer who can help you teach how to fall correctly so that you sustain as few injuries as possible.
  • Breakdancing is a great pastime, but can be quite dangerous. Consult an expert before beginning training to learn more about potential injuries.
