    How to Replace Door Knobs

  1. Step 1

Determine the size and type of doorknob you are replacing. There are two standard sizes, 2-3/8-inch and 2-3/4-inch. To ensure you have the correct size, you can measure from the door edge to the center of the hole. Some doorknobs are adjustable to fit either size, but be sure to double check the sizing before you purchase the replacement door knob.

  2. Step 2

Using the appropriate screwdriver, remove the screws on the sides of the doorknob. Pull on the knobs to remove them from the door. Remove latch face plate from edge of door with two screws. The latch should pull out of the door now. The last piece is the strike, which is located on the door frame and catches the latch when you close the door. There are two screws to be removed to take this piece off.

  3. Step 3

Begin installation by adjusting latch to appropriate size, if applicable. Insert latch piece into edge of door. Place latch-face on edge of door and secure with two screws (should be included with your doorknob).

  4. Step 4

Install outside knob by inserting spindle through latch. Press flush against door. Secure inside knob to spindle on opposite of door from outside knob by tightening screws snugly. Affix strike to proper place on door frame and screw into place.

  5. Step 5

Test door from inside by closing and opening to ensure you can disassemble doorknob if improper replacement has occurred.
