How to Identify Banded Butterfly Fish

The Banded Butterfly fish is a well known fish seen throughout the Caribbean. Here are ways that might help you identify it if you were to come across it.

  1. Step 1

    The Banded Butterfly fish has a tall and narrow body. It has a long snout that it uses to reach into small openings or cracks to catch worms or other small animals. They are around 8 inches long.

  2. Step 2

    They have two wide, dark vertical mid-body bands on their body. They also have stripes through their eyes which helps them in confusing their predators and to also help them sneak up on their prey.

  3. Step 3

    They swim by paddling with their pectoral fins on its sides.

  4. Step 4

    Banded Butterfly fish will stay together with their mate for most of their lives. They are never far from one another while they explore the reefs.

  5. Step 5

    These fish aren't very shy, which might make it easier to get close to them if you are careful.

  6. Step 6

    They are seen throughout the Caribbean but are also found in the Western Atlantic Ocean from Brazil to Bermuda.
