How to Counter a Salary Proposal After a Job Offer

How to Counter a Salary Proposal After a Job Offer thumbnail
You can successfully negotiate a higher starting salary.

The job of your dreams is at your fingertips. The company has called, and they are offering you the job. But when the human resources manager told you what your annual salary would be, you thought the position paid more. Now she is giving you 24 hours to accept this position, so what do you do?

Instructions

    • 1

Research the typical annual salary for the position (see Resources).

    • 2

Consider what you bring to the position--your experience, your education and your personality. Is this an entry-level position, or have you been working in this field for several years? Do you have a master's degree or a Ph.D.?

    • 3

Determine a target salary and a minimum you are willing to accept.

    • 4

Call the human resources manager and tell him you are very interested in the position but are concerned about the salary and would like to know if the company would consider an annual salary of a little more than your target amount. Explain that you would bring a certain number of years of experience to the job as well as your specific skills. Make sure you ask for an increase in the proposed salary; don't demand it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You will feel more confident if you have the research to back you up.

  • Use the same tact, intelligence and good manners you used to impress your future employer in the job interview.

  • Take into account any benefits the company is offering, such as health insurance and 401(k) plans. Also consider if position has room for advancement or the potential to lead to a better position.
