    How to Refrigerate Bulbs

  1. Step 1

If you live in a warm winter climate you need to refrigerate bulbs that require winter chilling for approximately 9 weeks. If you live in a cool winter climate, refrigerate your bulbs for 6 weeks. Check the bulb package to see if this is something that is necessary.

  2. Step 2

Do not place bulbs in a plastic bag, such as a used grocery bag, as this can cause the bulbs to rot. Put them either in a brown paper bag or in a bag specifically made for bulbs, such as the Fiskars Harvest Bag.

  3. Step 3

Place your bulbs in the refrigerator for about eight weeks. This tricks them into dormancy so they can store energy for new growth.

  4. Step 4

Some bulbs that are grown in cold winter climates need to be dug up and stored. To do this, wait until the foliage is dried and then dig up the bulb. Dust them off and store them in a cool, dry place in a breathable bag for about a week. Throw away any damaged or rotting bulbs and pack what remains in a dry peat moss or perlite in a cool, dry place until next season when it is time to replant them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Plant bulbs 3cm deep in a well-drained pot
  • Keep in shaded cool area until sprouts are 2-3cm long, then move to sunny location
  • Keep fruit out of the refrigerator that you have your bulbs in as ripening fruit produces ethylene gas which will stop bulbs from flowering.
  • Never store bulbs in sealed containers
  • Do not place a potted bulb near a heater
