How to Train a Dog to Use a Litter Box

  1. Step 1

The first thing you have to do to teach your dog to use the litter box is to show him where it is. You should have the litter box set up in a place where the dog can easily see it. When dealing with a puppy, your best bet is to put the litter box somewhere where it will be able to concentrate, without the distraction of people and other dogs.

  2. Step 2

Show your dog the litter box. Some people believe that placing something that carries the odor of feces or dog urine will help your dog understand that the litter box is meant for bathroom activities.

  3. Step 3

Instead of putting your dog out the back door immediately after she has eaten or awakened, set her in the litter box. After a while, she will start to make her way to the litter box on her own.

  4. Step 4

Make a huge fuss over your dog when he uses the litter box. Hug and pet him while telling him that he is the best dog in the world. When and if your dog has an accident, be firm with your reprimand, and place him directly into the litter box.

  5. Step 5

Make sure that you keep your dog’s litter box clean and full of fresh litter.
