Looms have been used for decades now and have changed, just like most things from the past, but the method of weave on the loom has not. The fibers have also changed. Most people look to use yarn or rags for making rugs, since that makes them easy to clean. Most commonly, the rag strips are tied to wooden frames and woven together as each strip is added. This method and others have been adopted since decades ago. The framed looms can be simple rod-style looms or looms with nails, either way they are wrapped with the same consideration.

How to Lay A Rag on a Frame Loom

  1. Step 1

Take rag strips that are about six inches wide and sew them together to create a continuous amount of fabric yarn.

  2. Step 2

Determine the size of the project and decide whether you need a large piece or small small piece. Once you start wrapping; it is harder to attach more strips to your continuous fiber.

  3. Step 3

Decide how much space you want to leave between each wrap of the bars. This will help stop the bubbling of the woven piece.

  4. Step 4

Start by tying the cloth strip to the bottom bar in the left side of the loom. Wind the cloth up and over the top bar of the loom and then come around the bottom bar of the loom. This is known as continuous wrapping and will later let you have a large piece of woven fabric. This is a very tradition wrap used in many sorts of weaving including Navaho rugs. The vertical structure of the wrapping is called wrap and the material that is woven through those wraps are called weft.

  5. Step 5

Keep going in this manner until the whole loom is full or until you have reached the desired size of your project.

  6. Step 6

Tie off the cloth using a secured knot to the bottom of the bar. Later you will need to sew this end to the woven project. Now, you are ready to start weaving!

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not use stretchy knits since it is a lot harder to keep the size in consistent manner
