The crossback kick is easy to perform and can help you adopt better balance when learning Tai Chi. This kick is performed seamlessly, but requires you to perform three steps. Even though you may think the power of the kick comes from your hips, it actually comes from the shins.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

How to Perform the Crossback Kick in Tai Chi

  1. Step 1

Start with your legs at hip distance. Your arms should be in a strike position, but relaxed. You will be combining a front kick and a side kick in order to perform the crossback kick.

  2. Step 2

Rock your body back and forth with your knees slightly bent until you're ready to perform the first kick. As you lean your body to the front, kick your front leg out sharply.

  3. Step 3

As you rock to the back, sharply kick your back leg to the side of your body.

  4. Step 4

Repeat this motion until you perfect it and can instruct others.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even though this kick seems easy, you may have to improve your balance in order to perform each movement correctly.
