Mastering the game of mancala is quite difficult. Making your own set, however, is simple. You need very little to get started, but more experienced players often create their own ornate boards.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 36 playing pieces (stones, coins, acorns, or any other small object)
  • 14 containers
  • A small board (optional)
  • Whittling knife or gauge (optional)

How to Make a Mancala Set

  1. Step 1

First, gather 36 playing pieces of any kind such as stones, coins, seeds, or even small gems if you are feeling luxurious.

  2. Step 2

Mark two rows of 6 containers (called "pits"). You can use cups or simply draw out areas on a sheet of paper or on the ground.

  3. Step 3

Mark one larger pit on each end called the "cala."

  4. Step 4

If you want a more traditional set, carve the pits and cala out of a small board, using a whittling knife or a gauge to create the depressions.

  5. Step 5

Place 3 pieces in each pit, leaving the calas empty.

Tips & Warnings
  • If carving your own board, choose a beautiful piece of wood. Spend time sanding and finishing it.
  • Do not make your pits too deep since the game requires you to constantly move pieces from one pit to another.
