It's a given that most people don't want to look old. Why would you? But, if you are performing on stage or need a unique costume mask for a party, you just might need to!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gentle Skin Cleanser
  • Soft Cotton Pads
  • Non-Greasy Moisturizer
  • Powder
  • Stage Makeup
  • Stipple Latex & Remover (optional)
  1. Step 1

Clean your skin thoroughly. Makeup and prosthetics should only be applied to clean skin; as neither bonds well to excessively oily or dirty skin. Use a gentle cleanser and cold water. This will keep your pores closed, preventing irritation from the makeup. If you have skin irritation from previous sun exposure or cuts from shaving, be very careful to treat your skin with special care. Pat your skin dry with soft cotton pads after you wash it.

  2. Step 2

Use a Non-Greasy Moisturizer. Your skin will break out later over time if you don't use a moisturizer. If you notice an acne flare up after you remove your makeup, be sure to use a moisturizer until your complexion improves.

  3. Step 3

Don't Use Old Makeup. Bacteria can flourish in makeup after repeated use, so you will usually want to get rid of stage makeup after 6-12 months. Furthermore, bacteria can be spread when makeup is shared. So don't use hand-me-down face paint for the same reason that you wouldn't use hand-me-down chapstick.

  4. Step 4

Use Powder to Defuse Brightness. If you are performing in a play, you will need to learn how to apply makeup for the stage. Be sure to use powder frequently to make sure your old age makeup isn't too shiny. Even if you are simply wearing this old age costume mask for a party, it is a good idea to carry powder with you just in case.

  5. Step 5

Look for Sweatless Makeup. This is generally costlier than makeup you will buy at the grocery store. (It is specifically-designed to be used in theater.) However, it definitely pays off by providing your skin with added protection. (Try M.A.C. Pro.)

  6. Step 6

Test Stipple Latex. If you want a strikingly-realistic wrinkle effect, you will want to spend $20 to buy stipple latex. You will also need to buy stipple latex remover. (For the best results, invest in a high quality product like "Old Skin Plast".) Stipple latex should be applied only after you have tested the product on your hand for allergies. Your old age costume mask will look and feel good if you follow these foundational steps.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask stage performers what they recommend. You can save yourself a lot of time by listening to performers and professional make up artists.
  • Avoid cheap makeup. It is produced from inferior products and is likely to cause a reaction.
