Ear mites are a common parasite that affect cats and dogs, although cats are affected more often. Even though ear mites live predominantly in the ear they do sometimes migrate to the head or other parts of the body. If left untreated, cats with ear mites might suffer from a secondary infection which may damage the ear and even cause deafness. Although ear mites may be treated with over-the-counter medications it is best to see your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Notice if your cat is frequently scratching at his ears and often shakes his head. If so, the chances are good that he may be suffering from ear mites.

  2. Step 2

Look for dried specks of blood inside the ear, a sign of ear mite infestation.

  3. Step 3

Watch for a crusty discharge inside the ear the resembles coffee grounds. This is the most common symptom of ear mite infestation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ear mite infestation can sometimes be prevented by keeping the ears clean. The ears can be washed with an over-the-counter ear wash or one can be purchased from a veterinarian's office.
  • Ear mites can be passed from pet to pet. When treating ear mites be certain to treat all pets in the household to prevent reinfestation.
