Nothing is more frustrating or heart breaking then when your teen is unhappy or acting out. You entire household can be turned upside down by an unhappy teen.There are no concrete answers on how to handle this since every teen is different. The one thing you should always try to remember is that teens do not think like you, feel like you, or react like you. Teens are dramatic and sullen, they either ignore you or make your life miserable. Dealing with them takes patience and understanding. Remaining calm is always in your best interest.

The most important first step is actually recognizing that your teen is troubled. Are they sleeping even more than usual, do they skip meals, are they unable to concentrate, maintain grades or communicate with friends? It is a given that they will find it hard to communicate with you so you need to watch how they are communicating with friends. Once you know that your teen is troubled, you need to find the reason for it. This is even harder than recognizing that they are troubled.

Knowing what is wrong with your teen is only the first step, admitting that you may not be able to help them by yourself is the next. If you do not feel that therapy is necessary then talk to their best friend. If you can make the friend understand you are concerned and want to help then you are one step closer to helping your teen. Keeping communication open with your teen without judging them will go a long way to making them want to talk to you. Always remember that no matter how trivial their problems seem to you they are enormous to your teen. Knowing when you are out of your element is as important as knowing what is wrong. If you cannot get through to your teen then you should seek help. It is never wrong to ask for help with a troubled teen and there are any number of organizations out there ready to offer a helping hand.

The worst thing you can do when your teen is troubled is nothing at all. Ignoring the problem makes it worse. The only thing worse than a troubled teen is a troubled teen who does not feel like their parents care. If you keep communication open at all times you stand a better chance or helping your teen though a crisis. Let them know you love them. Try to engage them by asking how their day at school was?

When you have tried everything if your teen is still troubled then you need to know how troubled they are. If you believe that your teen is in more trouble then you can help them with then you must get help. It is better to have your teen in therapy or in a therapeutic boarding school than to lose them. Do not ignore the problem. Face the issue and take the approprate steps.
