The mojito is an exceedingly simple drink. But like other simple drinks like the martini or gin-and-tonic, the mojito requires special attention to each one of its simple steps or else the result will be less than pleasant. Here's how to make a delicious mojito. This recipe makes 1 serving.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 tsp. sugar
  • 3 sprigs of mint
  • Soda water
  • 4 oz. light rum
  • 1 oz. lime juice (fresh-squeezed is best)
  • Ice
  • Wedge of lime
  1. Step 1

Put all of the sugar into the bottom a tall glass.

  2. Step 2

Place the mint sprigs on top of the sugar.

  3. Step 3

Muddle the sugar and mint together. If you don't have a muddler use a large spoon, preferably a wooden one, to crush the mint into the sugar and grind in together. Do this until you smell the mint strongly.

  4. Step 4

Splash in a dash of soda water and stir the mojito mixture well until the sugar dissolves completely.

  5. Step 5

Add the lime juice, light rum and ice.

  6. Step 6

Stir vigorously to combine the ingredients, then top the glass off by filling it the rest of the way with soda water.

  7. Step 7

Garnish with a wedge of lime and serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using top-notch rum will help ensure a top-notch mojito.
  • If at all possible, use fresh lime juice. This will greatly improve the taste of your finished mojito.
  • Do not make a mojito with dark rum. The resulting beverage will taste nothing like it is supposed to.
  • Don't skip the muddling process. If you do, the minty taste won't be present to help offset the other ones in the cocktail.
