The crowd at football games always looks forward to seeing the high flying lifts and stunts that have made cheerleading what it is today. However, these stunts are not easy to learn and are quite dangerous. Stunt practice must be taken very seriously so no one is injured. Here is one way to practice stunts safely.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • soft flooring
  • mats
  • lots of spotters (people to catch and assist)
  1. Step 1

Learn how the stunt is down correctly. Having someone show you that would be great but if not you should try to find video footage of the stunt so you can watch how the flyer moves and the bases maneuver.

  2. Step 2

Perform dry ground practices. Standing on the ground practice the arms and the body twists. Practice this several times until you feel you have it right. Have someone watch you and suggest any corrections that are needed. Visualize yourself in the real situation and practice it that way.

  3. Step 3

Have several spotters standing on all sides of the base to catch the flyer in case something goes wrong. Do a slow lift without the full trick a couple of times just to get used to the weight and range of motion. When everyone is ready, go for it. Someone should be watching and coaching you to make corrections to do it correctly or just improve the stunt.

  4. Step 4

After you have been successful, execute the stunt without the additional spotters. If all goes well, congratulations. If not, get the spotters back in and try again.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always practice on a soft, padded surface
  • Don't practice a stunt without doing a ground rehearsal first
