How to Cope with the Loss of a Dog

Losing a dog can feel much the same as losing a family member. Not just to the people living in that house, but to other animals as well. It's not easy, especially if you've had that dog since he was a puppy. I will reveal some tips that I learned to help cope with the loss of a dog.

Accept that whether you were prepared for the death of the dog or are having to put her to sleep, it will hurt. You'll probably shed some tears, but look at the facts. The dog is probably in a better place. If you watched her suffer through the last days, it probably tore you up inside as much as it did to have her put to sleep. No one, not even a pet, should have to suffer through that pain. So start thinking about that aspect of it.

Reminisce with family and friends that knew the dog about things the dog did or vacations you took with the dog and so. Sometimes talking about that will help everyone feel a little better because the dog lived a good life. It may also help to look at some pictures you have of the dog.

Keep in mind that humans won't be the only ones suffering if you have other animals in the house. They notice the absence of the dog and it may upset them. Other dogs or cats may become clingy to their owners and may even wander around the house looking kind of lost. This mainly happens to animals that have been in the house with the dog for many years. Try to comfort them as best you can. Nothing will replace the dog, but reassure them that you are still there for them and love them.

Know that time is the only other thing that can help. As time goes by, the memories won't fade, but the hurt will. Remember those good times and continue to talk about the dog you loved.

    • 5

Get another dog to try to help fill the void that was left with the death of your dog when you feel ready, if you feel ready.

I am sorry for anyone who has lost a pet. When I was a little girl we had alot of animals. I am an animal lover. My husband and I had a Chow/Lab mix. Bear was her name. She was a wonderful dog. She loved going to work with my husband and loved riding in the back of the truck. Or in any vehicle. She loved going bye bye. She loved going back and forth in the back seat to each window. Very protective of her mommy and daddy. She was a great dog. We lost her 2 years ago. It was very difficult to go through. My husband was very close to her. We had her cremated and she is in her pine box with her name on it very nice. One more thing I try and think of all the funny things she did and all the fun I had bathing a chasing after her. She would be all wet and go roll in the dirt. She also love the song Bad to the Bone. Everytime it came on she would go a turn her head at the speakers and start w...
