Oysters have been touted as an aphrodisiac for centuries, but even with that going for them, lots of people turn up their noses. Why? They're definitely an acquired taste raw ("on the half shell"). But cooked up in a casserole with lots of crackers and butter, they're delicious. Try this easy appetizer recipe as a starter for a fish fry or baked fish dinner.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 8 oz. can oysters, drained
  • 20 crushed saltine crackers
  • 1 cube butter or margarine, softened
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 15-1/2 oz. can evaporated milk

Step1
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a medium-sized casserole dish well.
Step2
Crumble saltines by kneading them in the package, then shake about 1/4 of the crackers into the bottom of the dish. Add 1/4 of the can of oysters and a few tablespoons butter or margarine.
Step3
Continue adding 3 more layers to the dish--crackers, oysters and butter. Finish with salt and pepper.
Step4
Pour the can of evaporated milk carefully into the dish.
Step5
Bake uncovered at 400 until top is browned. Serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use margarine in this recipe, but the taste is better with butter. Recipe can also be doubled. Use a 9 x 13-inch baking pan and adjust cooking time to about 30 minutes; check after 20-25 minutes.
  • Don't serve this recipe if your guests are allergie to shellfish.
